64. Pests and the Garden
I have so many pests bothering me all the time with my fur and all, but I donít let pest bother my plants or me. I have compiled a listing of short tips for you to use in your greenhouse and in the garden to help you fight pests. In this little discussion we will talk more about the smaller pests. I will have a listing about larger pests in a later session.
One of the best solutions I found for getting rid of bugs of many types, in the garden and in the greenhouse, is simply using soap and water! This may surprise you, but different bugs have different reactions to the soap. Using regular dish soap, whatever you have in the home is good enough. You donít have to use a special type or brand.
Use one tablespoon of soap to a gallon of water. Use a sprayer to put this solution over areas in your garden that little pests just seem to gather. I recommend that you donít Ďover useí the amount of soap because you can hurt the plants. You can use this solution on all types of plants, and not have to worry about chemicals, because if the plant is a type that you eat, you know that the soap will wash right off!
Many types of flies bother indoor or outdoor gardens. You can use fly strips in the greenhouse, or you can use flytraps in the outdoor garden. I was really leery about using a flytrap Ė you know the type, just like for Japanese beetles or Bee bags, but they really do work!
If you have a problem with pesky cats entering your garden and killing your favorite flowers, you can use vinegar around the outer edge of you garden. Simply pouring vinegar full strength around the exterior of your garden will keep the cats away! Vinegar also helps control weeds around your garden.
If you have a problem with bugs eating away at your garden you can use lightweight fabric covers to help protect against bugs landing on your garden and having a feast. While this method doesnít protect your garden from the pests that come up from the ground, it is a basic protection from flying pests.
As I find new and interesting pest control hints and ideas I will pass them along here. If you are experimenting with pest control on your own, be sure to read all the labels when you are using chemical on the foods that you might be eating!
