74. Stylish Formal Gardens
Gardens can greatly improve the overall appearance of any home. Even a small garden can dress up a home and make a huge difference. A formal garden should include symmetrical plants, rows of flowering plants, or sheared hedges. Are you searching to create a new garden in your landscape? What type of plants will you grow? What really is a stylish formal garden? Letís look a little closer.
Formal gardens often have plants neatly placed by the foundation of the home with neatly piled mulch and well-behaved perennials. A well-behaved perennial is a plant that does not sprawl or flop over.
Another consideration for formal gardens is island beds, which are where shrubs or perennials are allowed to grow naturally with annuals tucked into spaces for additional color. Edging adds a clean line while mulching is kept neatly mounded for a nice, tidy look. Using perennials that spread and multiply is a great choice for island beds.
Always consider scale in relation to the garden area and overall house size. If you have a large house and large area for planting, you can get away with using larger scaled plants with flowers mingled in. You do not want to design your garden that has large plants overpowering the smaller ones. You also do not want to use all small plants that do not provide interest for on lookers to your garden. You want to grab the interest of your neighbors and your friends!
Another good rule to follow is that the straighter the lines, the more formal the garden appears. You might even consider using a tape measure to create well-defined lines or shapes.
Although all gardens need some degree of maintenance, keep in mind that the more formal you want your garden to look the more maintenance will be required. It is also important to understand that with formal gardens, if one row dies or does not do well, the entire design is thrown off. With casual gardens, if a plant should die, it is usually not noticed whereas with a formal garden, it would be seen immediately.
Remember that any home will benefit from a formal garden. The decision is not based on the cost of the house but on the amount of time, you will be able to dedicate to the upkeep of this type of a garden.
