80. Vegetable Gardens
Vegetable gardens have been around as long as time and offer a perfect organic solution for family dinners as well as a relaxing hobby that provides self-gratification. When you think of a vegetable garden, a rectangular shape with long rows immediately comes to mind. The truth is, you can create your garden in any shape you want, as small or large as you can manage.
A new concept for vegetable gardens is a combination garden to include flowers as well. Many types of flowers can actually help keep your garden in great shape. For example, Marigolds and Snapdragons add beautiful color and help to keep rodents and pests away.
When creating a vegetable garden, work with the space you have available. Decide on a shape that is creative and has some fun with this. Many vegetables produce flowers during their growth stages so when planting, especially if putting together a combination garden, keep the flowering aspect in mind.
Another unique option for vegetable gardens is to border one side of your garden with fruit trees. Remember to allow enough room to get in to work with the vegetables but this along with the vegetables gives you a wonderful combination of foods. Some great options are Pistachio trees, Persimmon trees, Almond trees, Cherry trees, and Plum trees, with each producing great fruit and beautiful blossoms and colorful leaves.
If your garden is large enough, adding in a grassy walkway around or through your garden can provide a way to maneuver around your vegetables and flowers without stepping on and destroying them. Another option is to place stepping stones onto grass down the middle of a garden. This provides a nice clean look and is extremely functional.
Keep a small area of your garden designated for bedding plants such as strawberries and herbs to include basil, dill, ginger, and thyme. So now you can plant all your favorite vegetables and add in fruits and herbs. Your entire family can enjoy this all-around garden.
