13. Check out the Shape of Your Water Garden
When you are deciding that you want a water garden, you will have options in the size and the shape of a water garden that you are going to build. In order to make a good solid decision about whether you are going to like your water garden, if it is too big or if it is going to be too small I am going to present you a few methods using your imagination to picture what you final water garden will look like.
You can use stakes and pound them into the ground, tying a string or wire around the stakes to help you determine the shape of the garden pond that you want. If you are considering a fiberglass or pre-molded type of pond liner you can arrange the stakes according to the measurements of the pond liner to ‘check out’ if you would like this shape in your water garden.
Another ‘way’ to check out if you like the shape of a particular pre-molded pond liner is to use a long garden hose and recreate the shape of the pond in your garden. Can you picture this shape filled with water adding to the natural beauty of your gardens? If you have a hard time fitting the shape of a particular type into your garden you will need to change to a smaller or large or just a different shape of a pond liner so that you will end up with the perfect garden pond for your surroundings.
A tip for you that are close to digging out your water garden or water pond, create the shape that you want and when you have actually have it dug and you still don’t like it, you can fill it back in or change the shape by filling in certain portions of the hole. While this may seem like the long way around making up your mind about the size or the shape of your pond but this is an actual method that many gardeners will use when designing their water garden.
If you have a particular size and shape in mind you are going to find your shopping for a pool liner will be an easier process. You can create multiple ‘stringings’ or multiple outlines using your garden hose through out your gardens to find the best placement for your water garden as well as when determining the size and shape of your water garden.
